God Bless Grandma Mary

Grandma Mary (my dad’s mom) passed away last Saturday.  Her passing was peaceful, and she was surrounded by all her kids and many other loved ones.  She has also been greeted in Heaven by many of our other loving family members who preceded her.

Grandma Mary was a very fun grandma, and she adored all her grandkids and great-grandkids.  She always asked about Natalie – and I know she did the same with her other great-grandkids: Lily, Abigail, Nicholas, William, and the ones who haven’t even been born yet – RJ, Gavin and William’s baby sister or brother.

Many of my favorite memories of Grandma Mary include:
– Any and every weekend up north in Crivitz with all the cousins – swimming, skiing, playing baseball, riding the golf cart, playing cards, eating s’mores (Grandma would always accept the heavily charcoaled ones – my cousin Kacie thinks she even gave one to her once with the glowing charcoal)
– Girls Week up north in Crivitz, which included many trips to the Dollar Store, since the weather was crummy
– Riding our Barbie scooters over to her house, only 3 blocks away (She gave us those scooters for Christmas Eve!)
– Christmas Eve with all the cousins and other family
– The 1-2 months preceding Christmas, which was filled with lots of shopping and present wrapping (she never was very good at wrapping presents – but sure knew how to direct me to do it)
– Trick-or-Treating at her house (once again, only 3 blocks away), as we always had a special package of treats (I just found out for my mom yesterday that it was also a convenient stop to refill their beer!)

We went up to Green Bay for the funeral this week.  All our family was there, so it was wonderful to spend time with them – Grandma would have loved it!  Auntie Leah wrote a guest post:

Traveling to Green Bay for a loved one’s funeral is not an ideal reason to visit home.  Even so, the trip was WONDERFUL!  Every one of Grandma Mary’s biological grandchildren turned out for her funeral, including the first meeting of her three great-grandchildren (and an additional two in-utero!)

My mom and Auntie Leah are the girls in this picture who don't have a baby in their tummies! Thank goodness - I'm excited to have more cousins, but I like the 2-on-1 adult to kid ratio on my house for now!

Getting the whole family together happens less frequently now with the snowballing addition of spouses and in-laws, and our movement around the country and world.  However, our love for Grandma Mary and her great influence on the importance and joy of family time brought the whole Vanden Busch gang together for a few memorable days.  Here’s a recap of my favorite moments:

The meeting of new cousins and lifelong friends.  Watching the interactions of Natalie, William, and Lilly was so heart-warming and ADORABLE!  The three of them shared lots of smiles, laughs, kisses, spit, and toys.  They gave the grown-ups endless entertainment and put a smile on everybody’s face.  I couldn’t help but picture me and my cousins when we were the same age.  It’s no wonder we all became such good friends.  The addition of these new little cousins seems to have brought us even closer.  Natalie, William, and Lilly are technically 2nd cousins, of course.  However, they are true cousins as much as Uncle Chucky is Natalie’s uncle and not just her cousin-once-removed.  (Heck, he gets to see Natalie more than I even do!)

William, I hope you have a slam dunk of a birthday!!! P.S. you're a blast!

Overcoming tears with baby smiles.  Many tears were shed this week… but they always went away when you looked at a cute baby!  My best example of this was when the family had to circle Grandma’s casket before the start of the funeral.  My mom was standing next to me with tears in her eyes, but then Natalie caught her attention.  Natalie didn’t flash my mom a big open-mouthed grin, as she often does, but she gave her a beautiful, lips-together smile of recognition and love.  It was so incredibly heart-warming that it wasn’t possible to be sad!

Being with Natalie.  I didn’t think I would get to see Natalie until next spring, so I was very happy to spend a few days with her to see how she’s grown!  Natalie is constant entertainment.  At the post-funeral lunch, she was sitting on Uncle Mike’s lap being funny for Uncle Rob.

I bet I can get these adults to SMILE! Uncle Mike, you're pretty fun for a 27-year-old single guy.... 🙂

She would stare at Rob, smile, and lean all the way to one side…. over and over and over.   It was so fricken cute!  She also gave us lots of her snoot face, which made people who I didn’t even know laugh!  During the two hours I spent with Natalie in the backseat on our drive back to Chicago, I got to see how smart she is!  That chunky little girl might not be too mobile yet, but that’s probably because she’s too busy expanding her brain power.  She’s an intent listener when I tried to teach her words and impressed me by her communication abilities.  Natalie is trying really hard to say “duckie” (she’s got the “cchhh” sound down) and I swear she was pointing at the eyes on her musical toy bag and saying “eye.”  I then pointed at my own eye, and she said “eye”!
Seeing Becky be the biggest sister.  Although she might complain about her 8th month of pregnancy, Becky is the cutest pregnant lady ever!  I just loved to see my sister so huge, glowing, and expecting my new nephew!

This trip was a good reminder for us all that we just love our extended family to pieces and need to keep up Grandma Mary’s legacy of having valuable family time.  I don’t doubt that we will.

Love, Auntie Leah

Cute Things I take for Granted

Rachel had a vacation day earlier this week, so my Dad drove down for a grandfather-granddaughter day.  My mom was obviously very sad that she missed out and expected a full report from my dad.  She shared with me some cute things he noticed – just everyday things that I take for granted, so now I’m sharing them with you:

– Eating the bread herself, rather than feeding it to the ducks.
– Shaking her little arms when she sees the park approaching
– Sleeping on her side in an “L” shape (instead of on her back) and cuddling up to her mousy blanket.
– Laughing longer and louder – and showing her top 4 teeth when she does it

Grandpa and Natalie also rolled the ball back and forth a lot.

Your turn, Grandpa!

She is learning to color – which I first noticed b/c she was holding a purple crayon and now we have a “painting” next to the diaper changing table.  This happened to both my Dad and me!

See the purple crayon to the right of the Grinch's dog, who she also peeled off? As you can tell, she clearly finds diaper changing a little boring! I wonder what she has in store for us next.

Finally, I loved this – Grandpa was reading Natalie a book, and he didn’t realize it was a “lift the flap” book until Natalie reached for the flap to turn it up.

Natalie is a lucky little girl to have four grandparents who have been able to spend a lot of time with her.  In fact, Grandma and Grandpa are coming tonight – Grandma wanted to spend her birthday with Natalie!

Happy Birthday, Grandma! I have a hug waiting for you!

Go Pack! Beat Vikings!

I'd be all set to hike the ball... if only I could stand up on my own!

Go Pack!  Beat Vikings!

Natalie has been preparing for this game for 2 days – practicing throwing the football, doing stretches, and working on her strength by doing planks.  We hope the Pack is just as prepared!

At the line of scrimmage.... Ready, Set, Go!

Happy 10 Months!

Our little Bug-a-Boo is 10 months old!  Natalie is much more like a little girl than a baby.  Some highlights…

What - Uncle Rob's birthday is today too! How lucky for him that he gets to share his bday with my 10-mo bday!

Words: Natalie can say “mama,” “dada,” “nana” (for banana) “nigh, nigh” (for good night).  I’ve only heard the last two once, but I know that she was referring to the actual things.  The banana b/c I was eating it in front of her and not sharing – what a mean Mom!

Mama, Dada, look at the camera instead of me! Geez!

Foods: Natalie loves bananas, perhaps b/c I eat one everyday, so she gets it in utero and through milk today!  She can also eat bagels, bread, cheddar cheese, yogurt, strawberries, blueberries, rasberries, applesauce, squash, sweet potatoes, O’s (her fav!) and other snacks from my lunch and dinner.

Gross Motor Skills: She can stand up by holding onto things, but cannot get back down.  She can rollover from front to back both ways, and the other night, when squirming on me, she did her first back to belly.

Did you know that my Nana is my Dada's mom? Who would have thought?

Favorite Activities: Hanging out with… other kids, grandparents, Rachel, Mom and Dad (so basically, everyone!)  Going to the park.  Reading Brown Bear.  Playing with technology, esp. cell phones.  Standing and walking with assistance.  Saying “hi” to her Cat in the Hat “welcome” sign (an oldie, but a goodie) and the Grinch, which is above her changing table.  Taking baths.  Playing with Mr. Penguin (who has edged out Blue the Whale, in terms of fav bath toys), Eve, and Yot. Getting a shoulder ride on Daddy.  Dancing.  Snorting/sniffing through her nose.  Dropping things.

Jack, you are really fun - esp. for a 6-mo old! You can sit, smile, and drool with the best of them!

Hehe… this is fun! Dad, your hat tastes good!

Honestly, each month keeps on getting better and better!  Although Natalie isn’t as big of a cuddler as are other babies, she is generous with kisses.  Jordan and I were exchanging stories about where we’ve gotten kisses from her – his chest, my leg, my shoulder – and we think its because we kiss her all over, she doesn’t know that most kisses are for your face.  Isn’t that sweet?  She is very kissable. Happy 10 months, Natalie!

Duck, Duck, Goose

On Saturday, we took a family trip to the Lincoln Park Farm Zoo to feed the ducks and geese.

One (piece of bread) for you, One for me

I like that we can still experience a little bit of country life, even though we live in the 3rd most populated city!  It reminded me of the Wildlife Sanctuary that we went to growing up – and that we’ll take Natalie and RJ to next summer!

I'm such a big girl!

Got your glasses, Mama!

After being away for 86 hours (not that I was counting), this weekend of duck feeding, storybook reading, park playing, friends visiting and cuddling was just what I needed!  Natalie took very good care of her Daddy when I was gone… and managed to convince him to give her a slightly later bedtime!  If this (Natalie charming her dad into anything) is a sign of things to come, we’re in trouble!  In all seriousness, I think it was great for the two of them to have a lot of time together – Jordan described it as him not playing Robin to my Batman, but stepping up to be Batman himself (e.g. fully knowing all parts of her schedule, etc).  Yet, on Sat night, Natalie also said “mama” honestly, a hundred times… so, clearly I was missed.  Its nice to feel well loved!  I have the best family ever.

MacArthur Eagles

When we were in Green Bay for Becky’s baby shower, I took Jordan and Natalie to the park by my elementary school.  Natalie would clearly be a GREAT MacArthur Eagle.  We used to get our pics taken in front of the school…. nearly 25 years later, I think I took my best pic yet!

Mom, where's my backpack?

Mom, since I'm only 9 mo old and there's no one else around, its okay that you are hugging me so tightly. Promise that you won't make such a fuss when I'm 5 though. That would be embarrassing!

Natalie and I also sing the MacArthur Elementary song a lot….

MacArthur
Elementary
We’re especially
Extraordinary
We work so very hard to be the best that we can be.
We work all together
We work as a a team
Our good grades we display
We have lots of fun
We’re NUMBER ONE!
And we keep on improving day by day….

**Thanks Leah for the correction on the 2nd and 3rd to last lines of the song.  I don’t feel bad – she is a more recent grad of MacArthur (1997, instead of 1992, I think)

Jordan’s not a fan.  He thinks its prideful or nauseating or something like that.  I think he’s jealous that he’s not a MacArthur Eagle.

Snoot Face

Natalie likes to make this face – and loves when someone makes it back at her.  Its coupled with a deep breathing through the nose.  Nana calls it her snoot face. I’m not sure it makes for polite table manners, but the imitation game is fun!

Oh yeah, well what about this?

We had a wonderful visit with Nana… Natalie loves to dance with Nana and make silly faces.  We had a great trip to Navy Pier (pics to come).  Nana also went to the grocery store 3 times, cooked 2 dinners and did many other helpful things around the house.  Funny and helpful Nana – everyone should be so lucky!  We decided that Pop needs to come next time too… he really missed out on a fun weekend!

Night Night

So fun to be in Mommy's and Daddy's BIG bed!

I posed this pic last night, but I’m re-posting to share that Natalie has added another word to her repertoire: Night, Night.  If there’s other people around, Natalie and I always go around to say “night night” and give kisses.  Tonight, it was just the two of us, and I finished reading “Brown Bear” (a fav)!  Then, I started another book, but she got fussy, so I put her down to strap on the breast friend (yep, still using it!) and she looked at me, saying “Night Night”.  Clearly, this little girl was tired after a very full day of the grocery store, Oz Park, Farm Zoo (inc. feeding the ducks – which she loved) and Jonquil Park.  Three cheers for Columbus Day – and having the day off of work, esp. since I have to travel this week. 🙁  Say prayers for us!  I’m going to miss Natalie so much and am worried that she is going to miss me too much too, even though she has a lot of fun days ahead of her.
