16 months – does it get any better than this?

Natalie continues to grow into an adorable, sweet toddler.  Some favs as of late:

– Her growing vocabulary.  She can say the following words: eye, ball, balloon, bubbles, me, Na (for Nat), Nana, Dada, Ga (for Grandpa or Grandma or goose), Mama, boo, choo choo and uva (spanish for grapes).  She also loves animal sounds, like woof, roar / rahr, ssss and moo.

Whoa Dada, let me pop that Bubble!

– Her enthusiasm in which she greets new people.  Natalie loves to walk up and down our street.  She is quick to wave and smile – whether you are a sweet nurse from the Children’s Hospital or a punk high school boy.  She especially likes to dance to the music outside the hot dog store; run through Chipotle to look at the high chairs and say ‘hi’ to the diners; and peak in the cupcake store.  Oddly enough, she can also be shy with new groups – she often clings at the start of music class and has started ducking her head between my legs.

I can go down the slide on my belly, while holding the cup the cashier at Chipotle gave me. Can you?

– Her love for imitation.  She loves to be like Daddy, Mommy and Nana!  Recent imitations include: holding either Daddy’s razor (turned off) or electric toothbrush (turned on) against her neck, using Nana’s make-up brush and compact, drying her hair with Mommy, putting on Mommy’s jewelry.  Thankfully, this love for imitation has also helped us give her inhalor breathing treatments (between Natalie, Daddy, Mommy, Teddy Bear and Elephant, we’ve had about 30 breathing treatments today – two of which had actual medicine in them) and brush teeth (Natalie brushed my teeth while Daddy brushed hers – quite a spectacle.)

I've got Daddy's toothbrush - Catch me, Catch me, if you can!

– Her interest in initiating games.  Hide and seek is a favorite – although Natalie would much prefer to do the seeking.  When I try to get her to hide, I cover my eyes and count to 10 – inevitably, she becomes curious in what I’m doing and is usually inches away from my nose by the time I reach 10.  She also likes to go in her crib while Jordan or I grab mousey and have him dance around.  Of course, we cannot forget “surprise!,” whether it be surprising Daddy nearly every morning in the kitchen or bathroom – or surprising Aunt Jira and Uncle Alex over the top of the breakfast bar at Nana’s and Pop’s.

I've got not one, but two, mouseys, Mama! Just try to get 'em!

– Her expression of preferences. Nearly every day, she picks out her outfit or PJs (out of a choice of two items, usually).  She also likes to pick out her shoes – which is way better than the one blue “duck” shoe that she had last summer.  (Thank you, Nana and Aunt Jira!)  I wouldn’t mind of her preferences for food – cheese, fruit and bread – was a little less pronounced – what about some lean protein and fresh veggies?

– The seemingly small things she notices.  Natalie notices a lot of things that I don’t – just earlier this week, she was very intune to the chirping birds as we walked home from the park and even gets excited at the sound of a dog bark when we are inside.  What blessings to be thrilled by!

Of course, 16 months isn’t perfect.  Natalie’s palate leaves a bit to be desired, though isn’t terrible.  She has started throwing brief temper tantrums – she throws back her head and screams.  We try to make sure her head is safe and then let her scream for a couple seconds or distract her.  (Our nanny does a better job than me in helping her put words to some of those emotions.)  She doesn’t like getting her diaper changed, though some strategies like stickers and making a big deal of how she is stretching and growing tend to help.  She is very independent – she often doesn’t want to take the stroller at the start of a walk, but by the end, prefers to be carried.  Jordan is much better at carrying than I am – She’s probably about 27 lbs and doesn’t really “hold” on.

Each day, Natalie brings us – and so many people around us – so much joy.  We are truly blessed to have such a loving, fun, caring daughter.

Incredibly blessed to have a visit from G&G!

I know, I know.  My blogging is definitely sub-par, relative to my peak when I was a stay-at-home mom last summer.  Nevertheless, here’s my attempt to fill you in on the highlights:

Grandma and Grandpa visited last weekend.  We feel so blessed that just over 2 months after my mom’s accident, they were able to visit!  My mom’s recovery has been amazing – we are so grateful.

Hey Friends! I brought my G&G to class today - mind if they join in?

Grandma was especially excited to be at music class, since the other class she attended was before Natalie could walk.  Natalie definitely showed Grandma all the advantages of being a walker – from throwing scarves to catching bubbles to pounding on many different drums.

Oooo... its time for my SOLO!

And, nothing completes a G&G weekend like a trip to the park!  G&G were very impressed with Natalie going down the slide all by herself on her tummy – and side by side on the big one.  Natalie decided that Grandpa has a little learning to do when it comes to joint sliding:

Grandpa! I cannot see! Just because you wear a hood, doesn't mean that I need to wear one. I have plenty of other insulation, thank you very much! Its hard work to maintain these chubby cheeks and thighs!

After G&G headed out of town, Jordan, Natalie and I went to Molly’s Cupcakes – we cannot decide if we like Molly’s or Sweet Mandy B’s more.  Natalie was clearly happy with the decision:’

Mmm... Mmm... Mmmm.... Thanks, Mommy!

She honestly said “Mmm” with every bite.  I was pleasantly shocked tonight at dinner when she kept saying “mmm” to her Gerber green beans and Gerber veggies.  Yes, in fact, not only did she request more than one container (a first!), she also chose them over pizza!  I’m wondering if those decisions are somehow linked to her cold or teething.  Maybe they are easier to eat?

Natalie is blowing a kiss to you all – good night!

A fantastic Easter

Today, Natalie had a her second Easter and a fantastic one!  Scroll to the bottom for the photo montage.  We kicked it off with church at 8am, where we were 5 min late and lucky to find a seat.  Then a quick nap before meeting Nana and Pop for brunch.  Nana and Pop just moved to Chicago (down at Division and Clark) on Friday – we are soooo excited to have them here!

Brunch was delicious, and then we walked around and took some pictures in Old Town and outside our apartment in Lincoln Park.  It was an absolutely beautiful day, and Natalie was sporting a really cute purple dress that showed off her chubby arms and legs.  We “hunted” for an Easter basket, which contained bubbles, sunglasses, and eggs.  All big hits.  After attempting – and failing – to take a second nap, we make Easter cookies and went to the petting zoo.  Natalie was particularly enthralled with the baby chicks at the zoo.  And then she walked half the way home!

Walking with Natalie is sort of like escorting a really drunk, opinionated friend back from the bars.   You have to constantly be on your guard and make sure she doesn’t face-plant or get in a tussle with some oncoming dog or person.  This analogy is actually one of my better ones.

Natalie has gone from just standing to walking over 10 blocks in about 2 weeks.  Incredible progress!  She is also saying words like, “mama, “dadda” (I’m also referred to as “dad-o”), “nana,” “pop,” “bubble,” “baby,” “woof,” and “goose” (which is “guh”).  We are so lucky to have such a sweet, well-dispositioned little girl who is a ton of fun. Next year, we will dominate the Easter egg hunts!

Feed Me!

Natalie is a big girl.  She likes feeding herself breakfast, doesn’t like holding your hand when walking any more, and always wants to help you unlock the door (with keys).  A sample of what all this independence looks like…

FEED ME!!!

No, that’s not Natalie’s usual bowl.  She went for my bowl after she had finished her own breakfast.

Mom, watch me wave these spoons together and make lots of noise!

And, yes, Natalie really took, not one, but two, spoons from me.  My original and my replacement.  She did make some really fun noises though!  Needless to say, after this breakfast mess, she had a tubby.  She stayed in there for nearly an hour!  I love how she finds joy in everyday things, like breakfast and baths!

When Daddy’s away, the girls will play…

Jordan had an Entrpreneur Boot Camp all weekend – thankfully, it was in Chicago, so we saw him in the morning and night.  Yet, that meant the days were mother-daughter days!

On Saturday, we went to the bookstore and music class.  On Sunday, we met our good friends, Molly, Jeff and Megan, at the Children’s Museum.

Both girls say each others’ names – Natalie is “Naa” to Molly, and Molly is “Ma” to Natalie.

Molly, thanks for swooping in for a super quick hug!

Natalie has spent much of her past 15.5 months trying to keep up to Molly.  Today was no different.  Molly discovered what fun sorting can be – and Natalie jumped right in.

Hmmm.. should the purple fuzzy ball go in this cupcake tin or should the green one?

Despite the craziness that is free Target Sunday, Natalie got in some good walking too!

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa….

Although we missed our Dad, I’m thankful for all my Natalie time!  I think I’m finally “caught up” after my trip to Denver two weeks ago!

On a random note, I wanted to write that Natalie often waves good-bye to me when I’m putting her to sleep and leaving her room.  Its so sweet.

These legs are made for walking….

Natalie is officially a walker!  Last weekend, we visited my parents and arrived around 5 p.m.  Natalie was so excited to be at their house, exploring a new, but familiar, area and seeing her grandparents, who she hadn’t seen in awhile.  That seemed to be all the motivation she needed to start walking more than a few steps on her own!  Her walking is interspersed with many “oops” as she plops down, but she keeps on improving.

Hurry up, Great Grandma. We have places to go, people to see!

We had a great visit with my family.  We are so thankful that my mom is doing so well.  Natalie enjoyed seeing Baby Trevor, exploring the neighborhood, playing with Rachel (who has moved back to Green Bay and who she misses a lot!) and seeing the ducks (“daa”) and geese (“goo”) at the Wildlife Sanctuary.

Ah! Aunt Becky. You are so silly! Let me go - I've gotta get my toy before Trevor gets to it!

We’re excited for our next visit!  We love seeing Trevor grow.  He is so much bigger than even a month ago.  He is way less “bobbly” when sitting up and smiled and talked a lot.

Baby Trevor, your cheeks look almost as fabulous as mine! I recommend Greek yogurt, avocado and peanut butter to really fill them out.

Natalie’s photography

Natalie used to love to play with my flip phone. Although Jordan and his parents got me an iPhone for Christmas, here are two picture I pulled from the old phone. Natalie took them while in her car seat.

The bottom one shows Mr Baseball Head, a hand me down from my aunt Carollyn. He was actually at my mom’s house but Natalie loved him around 4 months old so we snatched him for car rides. I never would have thought he would be so much fun. We became very familiar with his jingle.

Who do you love?

Jordan “taught” Natalie this trick. When you say, Who do you love? She says
